Waters Corporation Launches Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD System to Advance Clinical Laboratories Services with Higher Sensitivity

New LC-MS/MS platform strengthens diagnostic testing capabilities for complex clinical applications

Waters Corporation has introduced the Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD Mass Spectrometer, a new addition to its MassTrak™ IVD System portfolio designed to improve analytical performance and reliability for diagnostic laboratories. The launch was announced at the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) 2026 Annual Meeting and expands Waters’ efforts to support advanced clinical laboratories services with more sensitive and robust testing solutions.

The newly launched system builds on the capabilities of the Xevo TQ Absolute IVD Mass Spectrometer, which has been recognized for setting a high-performance standard among in vitro diagnostic (IVD)-compliant tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers. The latest platform introduces enhanced sensitivity and improved operational stability, enabling laboratories to perform accurate measurements of low-concentration analytes in complex biological samples.

As demand for precision diagnostics continues to increase, clinical laboratories are facing growing pressure to deliver faster, more reliable results while managing increasingly complex testing requirements. The Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD System is designed to address these challenges by offering improved detection capabilities, allowing laboratories to analyze difficult samples with greater confidence and consistency.

The system has been developed specifically for routine diagnostic testing environments, where clinical laboratories services require dependable performance across a wide range of applications. By combining advanced liquid chromatography technology with tandem mass spectrometry, the platform enables laboratories to identify and quantify biomarkers, hormones, and other compounds that may be present at extremely low concentrations.

Waters stated that the Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD System delivers up to five times greater sensitivity compared with other instruments in its category. This improvement allows laboratories to achieve lower detection limits and conduct more accurate testing using smaller sample volumes. Such capabilities are particularly valuable in areas including women’s health, oncology-related hormone assessments, and toxicology testing.

For example, the system can support low-level estradiol measurement, which plays an important role in women’s health monitoring and hormone-related cancer assessments. It can also improve hair toxicology testing by helping laboratories detect drug exposure patterns over longer periods with greater analytical confidence.

Enhanced robustness aims to improve laboratory efficiency and testing reliability

Beyond sensitivity improvements, Waters has focused on strengthening system durability and reducing operational disruptions for diagnostic laboratories. The Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD System incorporates the new StepWave™ XR Ion Guide technology, which is designed to improve performance consistency when analyzing challenging biological samples.

Clinical samples often contain complex components such as phospholipids, salts, and other matrix materials that can affect analytical accuracy and instrument performance. Waters said the new system provides improved ion ratio consistency for up to six times longer compared with the Xevo TQ Absolute IVD System, helping laboratories maintain reliable results over extended testing periods.

The improved robustness could help laboratories reduce downtime and increase productivity by limiting interruptions associated with instrument maintenance and recalibration. For diagnostic facilities handling high testing volumes, consistent system performance is becoming increasingly important as healthcare providers depend on laboratory data for critical clinical decisions.

According to Waters, the Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD System combines the new mass spectrometer with the ACQUITY™ UPLC I-Class PLUS System, creating an integrated LC-MS/MS solution designed for fast and accurate sample analysis. The combined platform supports efficient workflows while simplifying the analysis of complex biological samples.

The introduction of this system also reflects a broader shift within diagnostic technology toward highly specialized testing capabilities. As personalized medicine, preventive healthcare, and precision diagnostics continue to expand, laboratories require technologies capable of detecting increasingly smaller biological signals with high accuracy.

Waters Senior Vice President of Advanced Diagnostics, Jianqing Bennett, said the company aims to provide clinical diagnostic laboratories with solutions that support confident decision-making through improved precision and flexibility. The company highlighted that the new platform is designed to help laboratories expand their testing capabilities across areas such as women’s health, cancer assessment, and toxicology.

Early users have also highlighted the potential impact of the technology on laboratory operations. James Nutt, Head of Laboratory Operations at Cansford Laboratories, noted that the system could strengthen analytical reliability, improve sensitivity, and expand testing capabilities for complex applications such as substance analysis in human hair samples.

The launch comes as diagnostic laboratories globally continue investing in advanced analytical technologies to meet rising demand for accurate and specialized testing. Mass spectrometry-based diagnostics are increasingly being adopted because of their ability to provide detailed molecular information that supports better disease understanding and treatment decisions.

With the Xevo TQ Absolute XR IVD System, Waters aims to provide laboratories with a platform that balances high sensitivity, operational reliability, and ease of use. The company expects the technology to support diagnostic providers as they expand testing services and address the growing need for precise clinical measurements.
